Monster movies

This is a brilliant article discussing the current monster situation in film and it sums up a lot of my thoughts. After seeing Super 8 (2011) and Cowboys & Aliens (2011) this week I realised just how similar the creatures are in the two films and it made me appreciate H R Giger's incredible imagination and vision in Alien (1979). It seems that in an era of film making when the special effects are so advanced and monsters should be the most creative, what is actually happening is the complete opposite. A little mention should be given to Attack the Block (2011) for trying something a bit different with its monsters and with a relatively small budget.
